I submitted the Joseph Joel Findley connection to Joseph Lewis Finley\par
and the Susan Blair connection to Brice Blair and Nancy McCoy to LDS,\par
ancestry, and rootsweb several years ago. I no longer show this\par
connection, as I have explained on my webpage 'Findley family notes'\par
(http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~alragsdale/).\par
I have tried to track down every rootsweb or ancestry page which\par
shows this, explaining my reasoning for no longer showing these\par
connections. There isn't any way to correct the LDS info and \par
they have copied it to CD's.Evidently it is still propagating \par
over the Internet.\par
I am sure that we connect to the Finley's of Ireland and Scotland.\par
I just don't know which branch yet.\par
The connections on ancestryDNA are not necessarily correct. \par
They are just a starting point for research. For example, my \par
two Ragsdale cousins and I showed my grandfather connection\par
to Tom Ragsdale on our trees. If I did not have other DNA info,\par
I would assume this is my correct line. But now I know that \par
my grandfather was a Wilcox so I have corrected my family tree\par
info to reflect this. I guess what I'm trying to say is just\par
having a name on our tree doesn't necessarily mean a connection\par
if there were errors made in assuming the connection, such as\par
I made in assuming Joel was Joseph Lewis Finley's son or Susan\par
Blair's parents were Brice and Nancy and that Tom Ragsdale was\par
my grandfather. \par
I am digging up all the DNA proof I can on our Finley's now.\par
Until ancestryDNA provides a 'chromosome browser' to decipher\par
connections, I am still using GEDmatch. It is the only chromosome\par
matching program that I have found that will work with ancestryDNA.\par
So far, no Finley/Findley's have submitted their DNA to GEDmatch.\par

Oct 6,2006:\par
Joseph Joel Findley b.1792 Tn* or Pa d.1842 Tn (birth year is \par
according to his gravestone at McNairy County,Enville,Tn)\par
* Tn did not become a state until 1796\par
I have never found proof that he is the son of Joseph Lewis \par
Findley (b.1753 Pa d.1839 Adams,Ohio). This Joseph Lewis \par
Findley had a son named Joseph Lewis Findley b.1793 according \par
to the book 'The Clan Finley' by Harold Stout.\par
Nothing further is shown.\par
My original thinking was that the name Joel came from Joe(for \par
Joseph)+L.(for Lewis). But it appears that the name Joel is far\par
more common (in Pa and Tn) than I had thought in 1995. A search\par
on ancestry.com census records reveals this. However, Joel \par
Findley is shown as Joseph in 1820 Lincoln,Tn then as Joel in \par
1830 and 1840. Another Findley descendant was shown as Joseph \par
and Joel in Tn and Ark. So the names could just be \par
interchangeable, like Jack and John.\par
The Susan Blair b.1798 Bedford,Pa had parents named Brice and \par
Nancy (McCoy)Blair.\par
Joel and Susan Findley named a son Brice. That Brice named a \par
daughter Nancy. \par
Joseph Lewis(b.1753 Pa) and Jean(Blair) Finley had a daughter \par
named Nancy also. \par
The name Brice is much more common than I had thought, in Tn \par
and Pa. \par
An ancestry.com search as above shows this. There were also \par
several Blair families in Tn in 1820 in Lincoln Co. Only two \par
Blair families are in 1810 in Rutherford Co,Tn. There are no \par
Finley or Findley families in 1810 but the census for Tn only \par
shows two townships in Rutherford Co.\par
The 1850 Tn and 1860 Ark census shows Susan Blair Findley was \par
born in Tn. All the 1880 Census records of her children say she\par
and Joel were born in Tn not Pa.\par
I know this is subject to who gave the info to the census \par
taker, but it bothers me that not one ever said Pa. \par
An article about Joel Findley in the Pope Co,Ark history by \par
Mrs.Reese Bowden(Lucille Findley?) says he was from Lincoln Co,\par
Penn. There is no Lincoln Co,Penn so did they make a typo, or \par
did someone have this info? I have never been able\par
to find out.\par
Other than my reasons above about Joseph Lewis Findley of Pa, \par
I have never seen any other info. Another descendant of his son\par
John D.C.Blair (of Ky)told me no one had ever found a Tn \par
connection to the Pa or Ohio Finley's.\par
My grandmother's second cousin John W.Findley of Batesville,Ark\par
researched this line from the 1970's until his death in 1991. \par
He never found who Joel's parents were but thought that they \par
were from Va. Joseph Joel and John W.Findley (b.1797 Va) were \par
next to each other in the 1820 and 1830 Tn census. The name \par
John W. was used by several of Joel's descendants and Joel was\par
used in John W.'s. John W. (Batesville) thought that Joel and \par
John W.were brothers but could never prove it. \par
\par
Note added Mar 2006:\par
In one of his letters to Mae Findley, John W.Findley wrote:\par
....one family came to America in 1720 the other 1734 and \par
members of both families were in Augusta Co,Va at the same time\par
and both families used the same usual family names,Robert,John,\par
James and Samuel, every family had sons by these names. I am \par
trying now to connect us with James and Elizabeth Patterson \par
Findley both born and married in Ireland had six children one \par
son John Findley married Thankful Doak had son John Findley,Jr \par
married Mary Caldwelland had son James Findley born 1745 in \par
Augusta Co,Va married Keziah Martin and had sons James,\par
Robert,Samuel, and Travis and I believe Joel my great \par
grandfather to be son of one of these boys Joel born 1792 and I\par
have a direct line from Joel to the present. Joel had son whose\par
name was Martin Findley this was my grandfather....\par
\par
My comments: I have since then found info in 'The Clan Finley'\par
that these sons were either too young or moved elsewhere than \par
Tenn but they also may have had a son John Findley born 1770 \par
Augusta Co,Va, married in 1791Katherine Walker (born 1770 also \par
in Augusta Co,Va), unknown where. He died in Davidson Co,\par
Nashville,Tn in 1838. \par
I have not been able to get a response from the person who \par
provided this info. \par
I have also been unable to find anything else at the Tenn \par
Archives in Nashville..... yet. Maybe some day???\par
\par
Al Ragsdale\par
\par
\par
I recently researched all the Westmoreland Co,Pa indexed \par
microfilms I could find at the Pa Archives, hoping to find \par
mention of Joseph Lewis Finley (the son b.1792). I also \par
researched all the cemetery and marriage and other\par
books I could find at the Pa State Library. No mention of \par
Joseph Lewis Finley.\par
The 1800 Census lists only 108 Finley and 37 Findley families. \par
The majority were in NC and Pa. This census does not include Tn\par
or Va.\par
The 1790 Census lists only 54 Finley and 33 Findley families, \par
again with the majority in NC and Pa. This census also did not \par
include Tn (statehood was 1796) or Va (statehood 1788).\par
My questions:\par
If Joseph Joel Findley was born in Tn, who are his parents? And\par
siblings?\par
If Susan Blair was born in Tn, who are her parents? And \par
siblings?\par
If Joseph Joel and Susan were married in Tn, where? \par
If they were born in Pa, how did they end up in Tn?\par
I hope to go to the Nashville,Tn State Library & Archives and \par
Lincoln County,Tn Library soon and then maybe Ohio and Va \par
someday.\par
I personally do not have any problem with anyone showing any \par
connections to people but others have questioned my logic on \par
assuming this connection. I have dropped it from my personal \par
GED and tried to note it to all the websites I can do so on.\par
Thank you.\par

Hi Wayne,\par
 \par
I am Bryce D. Blair, of Medina, OH, and am directly related to \par
the Brice (II)Blair & Nancy "Agnes" McCoy you have mentioned in\par
at least two informative\par
postings on Rootsweb boards (dated: 20 Apr 05 and 23 May 05). \par
I have spent the last 25 years researching my Blair line which \par
has been proven back to Brice's father, Brice (I) Blair, \par
b.ca.1720 in the North of Ireland & his second wife, Susannah \par
(unknown). I have published a book (in 2000) on his history \par
and descendants called, The Bean's Cove Blair Clan Genealogy.\par
 \par
The reason I am writing is to comment on your reference to his \par
daughter, Susan Blair (b.1798 in Bedford Co, PA) in both \par
postings. I have seen other references to her on the Internet \par
as well. The truth is that Brice (he is also my namesake)had \par
two daughters they named Susannah, probably named after their \par
grandmother. However, both died young according to the family \par
tradition and an Orphan's court record. I also have a copy of \par
the old Brice (II) Blair Family Bible giving the birth dates of\par
all in that family group. The first Susannah was born on \par
11 Jul 1790 in Southampton Twp, Bedford Co, PA and the other on \par
11 Jul 1798 in the same place. There were no death records \par
kept in Bedford Co.at the time so I only have the old Bible \par
record and an Orphan's Court record on his minor children \par
shortly after he died, intestate, on 26 Oct 1813 in Bedford\par
Co, PA. According to the law of the time, the County's \par
Orphan's Court was required to appoint a legal, male guardian \par
for fatherless children under the age of sixteen and approve \par
the selection of a guardian for those sixteen to twenty one. \par
The second Susannah would have been 15 years old at the time \par
had she lived. She is not mentioned in the court record where\par
as all the others are. I do not have a death date for either \par
Susannah but their grandmother died on 14 Feb 1819 \par
(68 years old).\par
 \par
Sometime before I got into my research, someone filed some data\par
with the LDS on Brice (II)'s family, possible based on another\par
copy of the old Blair Bible record and the LDS just transferred\par
it to the IGI without checking further, creating them is \par
information used by others.\par
 \par
I certainly don't mean to "rain on anyone else's parade" but I \par
thought you might be interested in what information I have on \par
the subject and will be very interested in your comments. \par
Incidentally, the Family of Blair is very large and well \par
represented, even today, through out the USA, the UK and the \par
British Commonwealth. I am also part of the Blair Society for \par
Genealogical Research,see www.blairsociety.org for more details.\par
I very much hope this e-mail gets through to you and hope to \par
hear from you soon and hope your Finley/Findley\par
research is going well.\par
 \par
Sincerely,\par
 \par

Hello Bryce,\par
Thank you very much for the info. I no longer show the Susan \par
Blair to Brice Blair or Joseph Joel Finley to Joseph Lewis \par
Finley connections in my GED. I have also tried to find every \par
web site that shows this and show corrections and also \par
email the submitters.\par
I wish there was a way to correct the LDS info or at least add \par
a note giving the reasons for why we showed a connection.I have\par
no problem with you correcting any web site that you find. I \par
appreciate it. I would also like for you to let me know.\par

Chester,Pa 1859, parents \par Samuel FINLEY & Sarah M. HOOPES\par \par It appears the names Joel and Joseph were used interchangeably, like\par John and Jack.\par \par 1998 Notes\par \par In the 1970's, John W.FINDLEY of Batesville,Ark corresponded with \par his cousin, our Grandmother Mae FINDLEY of Essex,Mo.(originals in \par possession of Wayne A.Ragsdale,Birmingham,Al).John W.had not found \par who Joel's parents were yet. He mentioned in one letter about a book.\par I had not been able to find any more info on this or about him. In\par Sep 1998 I emailed several FINLEY/FINDLEY's in Batesville. Cathy\par Finley Bufford (email bufford@cei.net, Randall & Cathy)found info \par that John W. had died Nov.1991 and was buried at Lee's Chapel Cemetery.\par She gave me the names of his daughters:\par Annette Findley Cleveland,June Findley Wilson,Dannalee Findley \par Watkins. I wrote Annette and Dannalee but have never received a reply.\par In Nov 1998 I found a Preston W.BOLTON who had submitted Joel FINDLEY to \par WFT. I got his address from Family Tree Maker: \par 9307 Saffron Hill Ct.\par Manassas,Va 22110\par He emailed back (email BOLTON_WOODY@prodigy.net). He was a descendant of \par Brice M.FINLEY, the son of Joel & Susan. He had a copy of the book from \par about 1988. Following is one of the pages in the book about the Findley \par family:\par "Our common ancestor as far back as I have been able to trace is Joel \par Findley. The first place I was able to locate him was Lincoln Co,Tenn \par in the year 1820.At this time he was married and had two sons, both\par probably born there. After this time there were three more sons, all\par born in Lincoln Co. \par In the year 1840 the family moved to the northeast corner of \par McNairy Co,Tn on the waters of the White Oak. Joel was born \par April 14,1797 in Tenn, supposedly of Irish parents of Va \par blood line of Findleys that moved to Tenn sometime between 1794 and 1797.\par He was married to Susan BLAIR about 1816 or the first part of 1817. Susan \par Blair was born Apr.20,1799 in Tenn. Joel died Jan 19,1842 with winter fever\par (pneumonia)and was buried in Mt.Zion cemetery in McNairy Co. near Enville,\par Tenn.\par After Joel's death Susan continued to live with her three youngest\par sons on the home place, since the two eldest sons Martin and \par Brice M.were already married.About 1849-1850 the next son Lorenzo Dow\par married leaving the two youngest sons John W. and Josiah S. at home \par with Susan. About the latter part of the 1850's Susan along with \par the unmarried sons and Lorenzo Dow who was married and part of his \par family already born moved to Pope Co,Ark and settled in the Gum Log \par community. Later moving to the Center Valley community, where she \par remained making her home with the youngest son, until her death on \par Aug 21,1866. Susan was buried in Center Valley Cemetery, Pope Co,\par Russellville,Ark.\par In Lincoln Co,Tn Joel and a John W.Findley lived neighbors for\par 20 years. It is not known if they were related, but it is believed\par they were brothers.John W. was three years older than Joel, had three\par daughters, and a son by the name of Joel.Joel and Susan had five sons,\par one of whom was named John W. John W.'s son Joel married a girl named\par Lucinda. Joel and Susan's son Martin named his daughter Lucinda and \par his son John W. and a daughter Mary which was the name of John W.'s wife.\par After Joel died John W. and his wife Mary, with their family, moved\par from Lincoln Co,Tenn to McNairy Co,Tenn, settling in the same area as\par Susan and her children. One of John W. and Mary's daughters married\par Jeptha Pond. It is believed another daughter married John Meek in\par Lincoln Co and came to McNairy\par Co with the Meek families. She was called Aunt Polly Meek, also \par Aunt Polly Findley. She lived to be 105 years old and is still remembered\par by some.\par John W. and his wife Mary are buried in the Mt.Zion cemetery, \par McNairy Co, near Enville,Tenn. Their son,Joel and daughter Sarah\par Elizabeth, who married Jeptha Pond, moved to Randolph Co,Ark where it\par is presumed they are buried along with, the family members who died\par there. Daughter Mary (Polly) who is thought to have married John Meek\par is buried somewhere in Mt,Zion cemetery near Enville.\par Thus in these following pages we shall see the generations as they\par have multiplied and passed our way never to return and fill us in on\par many things long forgotten. "\par \par Note added Mar 2006:\par In one of his letters to Mae Findley, John W.Findley wrote:\par ....one family came to America in 1720 the other 1734 and members of\par both families were in Augusta Co,Va at the same time and both families\par used the same usual family names, Robert,John,James and Samuel, every\par family had sons by these names. I have also been\par unable to find anything else at the Tenn Archives in Nashville..... yet.\par Maybe some day???\par \par Al Ragsdale\par \par Update August 7,2006:\par \par Joseph Joel Findley b.1792 Tn* or Pa d.1842 Tn (birth year is \par according to his gravestone at McNairy County,Enville,Tn)\par * Tn did not become a state until 1796\par I have never found proof that he is the son of Joseph Lewis Findley \par (b.1753 Pa d.1839 Adams,Ohio). This Joseph Lewis Findley had a son \par named Joseph Lewis Findley b.1793 according to the book 'The Clan Finley'\par by Harold Stout. Nothing further is shown.\par My original thinking was that the name Joel came from Joe(for Joseph)\par +L.(for Lewis). But it appears that the name Joel is far more common \par (in Pa and Tn) than I had thought in 1995. A search on ancestry.com census\par records reveals this.\par However, Joel Findley is shown as Joseph in 1820 Lincoln,Tn then as \par Joel in 1830 and 1840. Another Findley descendant was shown as Joseph\par and Joel in Tn and Ark. So the names could just be interchangeable,\par like Jack and John.\par The Susan Blair b.1798 Bedford,Pa had parents named Brice and Nancy (McCoy) \par Blair. Joel and Susan Findley named a son Brice. That Brice named a \par daughter Nancy. Joseph Lewis(b.1753 Pa) and Jean(Blair) Finley had a\par daughter named Nancy also. The name Brice is much more common than I\par had thought, in Tn and Pa. An ancestry.com search as above shows this.\par There were also several Blair families in Tn in 1820 in Lincoln Co.\par Only two Blair families are in 1810 in Rutherford Co,Tn. There are no\par Finley or Findley families in 1810 but the census for Tn only shows\par two townships in Rutherford Co.\par The 1850 Tn and 1860 Ark census shows Susan Blair Findley was born in\par Tn. All the 1880 Census records of her children say she and Joel were\par born in Tn not Pa.I know this is subject to who gave the info to the\par \par census taker, but it bothers me that not one ever said Pa. \par An article about Joel Findley in the Pope Co,Ark history by \par Mrs.Reese Bowden (Lucille Findley?) says he was from Lincoln Co,Penn.\par There is no Lincoln Co,Penn so did they make a typo, or did someone\par have this info? I have never been able to find out. Other than my\par reasons above about Joseph Lewis Findley of Pa, I have never seen any\par other info. Another descendant of his son John D.C.Blair\par (of Ky)told me no one had ever found a Tn connection to the Pa or Ohio\par Finley's.My grandmother's second cousin John W.Findley of \par Batesville,Ark researched this line from the 1970's until his death\par in 1991. He never found who Joel's parents were but thought that they \par were from Va. Joseph Joel and John W.Findley (b.1797 Va) were next to \par each other in the 1820 and 1830 Tn census. The name John W. was used\par by several of Joel's descendants and Joel was used in John W.'s. \par John W. (Batesville) thought that Joel and John W. were brothers but\par could never prove it. \par \par Note added Mar 2006:\par In one of his letters to Mae Findley, John W.Findley wrote:\par ....one family came to America in 1720 the other 1734 and members of\par both families were in Augusta Co,Va at the same time and both families\par used the same usual family names, Robert,John,James and Samuel, every \par family had sons by these names. I am trying now to connect us with James\par and Elizabeth Patterson Findley both born and married in Ireland had \par six children one son John Findley married Thankful Doak had son John\par Findley,Jr married Mary Caldwelland had son James Findley born 1745\par in Augusta Co,Va married Keziah Martin and had sons James,\par Robert,Samuel, and Travis and I believe Joel my great grandfather to\par be son of one of these boys Joel born 1792 and I have a direct line\par from Joel to the present. Joel had son whose name was Martin Findley\par this was my grandfather....\par \par My comments: I have since then found info in 'The Clan Finley' that\par these sons were either too young or moved elsewhere than Tenn but they\par also may have had a son John Findley born 1770 Augusta Co,Va, married\par in 1791Katherine Walker (born 1770 also in Augusta Co,Va), unknown\par where. He died in Davidson Co,Nashville,Tn in 1838. I have not been\par able to get a response from the person who provided this info. I have\par also been unable to find anything else at the Tenn Archives in\par Nashville..... yet. Maybe some day???\par \par Al Ragsdale\par \par \par I recently researched all the Westmoreland Co,Pa indexed microfilms \par I could find at the Pa Archives, hoping to find mention of Joseph Lewis\par Finley (the son b.1792). I also researched all the cemetery and marriage\par and other books I could find at the Pa State Library. No mention of\par Joseph Lewis Finley.\par The 1800 Census lists only 108 Finley and 37 Findley families. The\par majority were in NC and Pa. This census does not include Tn or Va.\par The 1790 Census lists only 54 Finley and 33 Findley families, again\par with the majority in NC and Pa. This census also did not include Tn\par (statehood was 1796)or Va (statehood 1788).\par My questions:\par If Joseph Joel Findley was born in Tn, who are his parents? And siblings?\par If Susan Blair was born in Tn, who are her parents? And siblings?\par If Joseph Joel and Susan were married in Tn, where? \par If they were born in Pa, how did they end up in Tn?\par I hope to go to the Nashville,Tn State Library & Archives and Lincoln\par County,Tn Library soon and then maybe Ohio and Va someday.\par I personally do not have any problem with anyone showing any \par connections to people but others have questioned my logic on assuming\par this connection. I have dropped it from my personal GED and tried to\par note it to all the websites I can \par do so on.\par Thank you.\par \par Al Ragsdale\par May 25,2005\par ********************************************************************************\par August 7,2006 Update:\par \par Gmail Wayne Ragsdale \par Joel Finley Genealogy and Comment\par 2 messages\par Bryce D. Blair Wed, Aug 2, 2006 at 9:03 AM\par To: Wayne Ragsdale \par Hi Wayne,\par \par I am Bryce D. Blair, of Medina, OH, and am directly related to the \par \par Brice (II) Blair & Nancy "Agnes" McCoy you have mentioned in at least\par two informative postings on Rootsweb boards (dated: 20 Apr 05 and \par 23 May 05). I have spent the last 25 years researching my Blair line\par which has been proven back to Brice's father, Brice (I) Blair, b.ca.1720\par in the North of Ireland & his second wife, Susannah (unknown). I have\par published a book (in 2000) on his history and \par descendants called, The Bean's Cove Blair Clan Genealogy.\par \par The reason I am writing is to comment on your reference to his \par daughter, Susan Blair (b.1798 in Bedford Co, PA) in both postings.\par I have seen other references to her on the Internet as well. The truth\par is that Brice (he is also my namesake) had two daughters they named\par Susannah, probably named after their grandmother. However, both died\par young according to the family tradition and an Orphan's court record.\par I also have a copy of the old Brice (II) Blair Family\par Bible giving the birth dates of all in that family group. The first\par Susannah was born on 11 Jul 1790 in Southampton Twp, Bedford Co, PA\par and the other on 11 Jul 1798 in the same place. There were no death\par records kept in Bedford Co.at the time so I only have the old Bible\par record and an Orphan's Court record on his minor children shortly after\par he died, intestate, on 26 Oct 1813 in Bedford Co, PA. According to\par the law of the time, the County's Orphan's Court was required to appoint\par a legal, male guardian for fatherless children under the age\par of sixteen and approve the selection of a guardian for those sixteen\par to twenty one. The second Susannah would have been 15 years old at \par the time had she lived. She is not mentioned in the court record where\par as all the others are. I do not have a death date for either Susannah\par but their grandmother died on 14 Feb 1819 (68 years old).\par \par Sometime before I got into my research, someone filed some data with\par the LDS on Brice (II)'s family, possible based on another copy of the\par old Blair Bible record and the LDS just transferred it to the IGI\par without checking further, creating the misinformation used by others.\par \par I certainly don't mean to "rain on anyone else's parade" but I thought\par you might be interested in what information I have on the subject and\par will be very interested in your comments. Incidentally, the Family\par of Blair is very large and well represented, even today, through out\par the USA, the UK and the British Commonwealth. I am also part of the\par Blair Society for Genealogical Research, see www.blairsociety.org for\par more details. I very much hope this e-mail gets through to you and\par hope to hear from you soon and hope your Finley/Findley \par research is going well.\par \par Sincerely,\par \par Bryce D.
